Veil Privacy Policy
Effective 8 October 2026 · Applies to the Veil Chrome extension
Short version: Veil never sends, sells or shares your data. The little it stores (your settings, the chats you hide, and a scrambled copy of your PIN) stays in your own browser, and removing the extension removes it.
What Veil stores, only on your device
Veil uses Chrome's built-in extension storage on your computer. It is not synced to your Google account and never sent to us or anyone else. It holds:
- Your settings: blur mode, which areas to blur, blur strength, and the step-away options.
- The title and ID of each chat you choose to hide, and any keywords you add, so Veil can keep hiding them.
- If you set a PIN: a salted, one-way hash of it (never the PIN itself) and a count of wrong attempts, so it can slow down guessing.
- Whether you are currently unlocked. Chrome clears this every time it closes.
What Veil reads
Veil runs only on chatgpt.com, claude.ai and gemini.google.com. On those pages it looks at the page in your browser to find the chat list, messages, input box and images, so it can blur them, and reads chat titles so it can hide the ones you picked. This happens entirely inside your browser. Veil does not record, copy or transmit what you type or what the AI replies.
To lift the "you stepped away" blur, Veil notices that you moved the mouse or pressed a key, and it asks Chrome whether your computer is idle. It does not record which keys or where the mouse went.
Veil changes the chat pages to blur and hide things, and those pages' own code can see those changes, the same as with any extension that changes a page.
What Veil does not do
- No network requests. Fonts and icons are bundled inside the extension.
- No analytics, tracking, ads, accounts or third-party services.
- No selling or transferring of data, and no use of data for anything other than the features above.
Veil's use of the data described above complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Permissions, and why
- Storage: saves the settings listed above on your device.
- Idle: tells Veil when your computer has been idle, so it can lock or blur the page.
- Context menus: adds "Hide this chat (Veil)" to the right-click menu.
- Access to chatgpt.com, claude.ai and gemini.google.com: needed to blur and hide content on those sites. Veil has no access to any other site.
Deleting your data
Unhide chats or remove keywords and your PIN from Veil's settings page at any time. Removing the extension deletes everything Veil stored.
A note on security
Veil's PIN lock is a privacy screen for people looking at your computer. It does not encrypt your chats, and your chats remain in your ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini account as usual. Anyone who can use your computer can still turn Veil off in Chrome's extension settings.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date. Veil will never start sending data anywhere without updating this policy first.
